The exact origins of the flag are unknown, but it became increasingly popular during the “Black Lives Matter” campaign, and is based on an earlier flag which had the same design, without the incorporation of the Trans Flag.

The Trans Flag was specifically added to highlight the much higher rates of violence, sexual assault and death amongst Trans people of colour than the general population.

The fist featured in the centre of the flag has long been associated with solidarity, activism and resistance.
